Free Ways to Speed Up Your Internet

Even with broadband connections, Internet speed can often be painfully slow! Consumers are regularly finding that they are not getting internet connection speeds that their internet service providers advertise and quite often it is because of conditions on the actual PC they are working on. That is good, because it means that there are things you can do yourself to speed up your internet, even if you don’t want to change your internet service provider or the service package you have.

First, Check your Speed
This is important because you will be able to then check your progress and see what impact each of your changes has and whether you managed to speed up your internet.

Talk to your ISP
Your internet service provider may be able to speed up your internet remotely from their end. You won’t know if you don’t ask, so it is always worth giving them a call to see what they can do.

Move Your Router
Most people don’t realize that you can speed up your internet just by moving your router. This can give you greater signal strength if you put your router in a position where there are no physical barriers like walls and doors between it and your PC. Also put your router out of the way of cordless phones etc which emit a wireless signal which may interfere with your internet.

Clean Up your Cache
Your PC’s internet browser stores a copy of any web pages you visit, in the cache. These inevitably take up space in your PC’s memory, so you can help to speed up your PC by from time to time emptying the cache on your computer.

Update your Browser
You can usually speed up your internet by moving to a new internet browser. That will enable you to download web pages much more quickly. Just take care before you change any of your computer’s settings, but you can easily find free downloads of the latest web browsers.

Monitor your PC’s Applications
Applications such as Windows Updates and RealPlayer use a lot of memory, and may be running even when you don’t realize that they are. You don’t need to get rid of these applications completely. Just change their settings so they don’t start up automatically. That way you can use them when you want to, and at other times they don’t eat up your PC’s memory. This should make a noticeable improvement in terms of how much you can speed up your internet.

All of these tips should help you speed up your internet and have everything on your computer working much more efficiently.
